The Universities of Leicester, Southampton, Surrey, Edinburgh and Open University have been given £4.8m by the government’s Connecting Capability Fund to fund research and innovation in the space industry.
The universities are part of the Space Research and Innovation Network for Technology (SPRINT), which also includes the UK Space Agency, the Satellite Applications Catapult, Seraphim and the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
The money will be used to support SMEs working with universities and follows the March 2018 statement of the government’s intention to ‘inject billions‘ into the UK economy through investments in the space sector.
