Theresa May announces industrial plan

Theresa May launched an industrial strategy on 23rd January, marking a change in tone from government policy under David Cameron.

May stated that the strategy “…will be underpinned by a new approach to government, not just stepping back but stepping up to a new, active role that backs business and ensures more people in all corners of the country share in the benefits of its success.”

Deregulation, help with trade deals, and the creation of institutions to boost skills or research were all listed as possible interventions.

The strategy encompasses the recently-launched Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and a newly-announced £556 million for the “Northern Powerhouse”.
