German Industrial Leaders Prioritize Protecting EU Single Market over Helping with UK Trade Deal

German industry leaders say they will not help UK secure post-Brexit trade deal.

Two of the largest German industry groups have warned the UK that German industry will not help to secure post-Brexit trade deals. Rather, they stated, their priority will be protecting the single market for the 27 member states that will remain after the UK’s exit from it.

Ingo Kramer, president of the confederation of German employers’ associations (BDA) said of this position:

“The single market is one of the major assets of the EU. Access to the single market requires the acceptance of all four single market freedoms. The UK will remain a very important partner for us, but we need a fair deal for both sides respecting this principle. The cohesion of the remaining 27 EU member states has highest priority.”
